Buying Advice Doesn’t Mean You Have An Advisor

Real Advisors vs. Advice Sellers: Why Experience — Not Hype — Moves the Needle
We live in an era where “coaching” has become a billion-dollar industry — and yet, the quality of the advice being offered is more diluted than ever. Everywhere you look, someone’s a life coach, a business strategist, or an executive whisperer. But when you dig beneath the shiny branding, motivational quotes, and Instagram reels, one thing becomes clear:
Most of them have never actually done the work they’re getting paid to coach.
They’ve never built a business. Never managed a crisis. Never carried the burden of making payroll, negotiating with lenders, or leading through volatility. Never had their name on the dotted line — or on the door.
But they have figured out how to self-promote, sell generic “master the obvious” advice, and leverage vague buzzwords like “alignment,” “mindset,” and “manifestation” to pad their income at the expense of people who genuinely need help.
Hope is Not a Strategy
Let’s be honest: wishes, dreams, and good intentions mean nothing without execution. You can journal your affirmations, visualize your ideal life, and re-watch every TED Talk ever made — but if you don’t put in the work, it’s all fantasy.
Dreams without a plan are just hallucinations.
And no amount of “mindset mastery” is going to move the needle if you’re still stuck in the same cycles of inaction, avoidance, and vague direction.
The business world rewards clarity, accountability, and action — not vibes.
The Problem with “Coaches” Who’ve Never Played the Game
Here’s a simple truth that too many people ignore:
You can’t coach a sport you’ve never played.
You can’t walk into an NFL locker room and talk about winning games if you’ve never been hit on the field. You can’t advise a CEO on turnaround strategy if you’ve never been in the C-suite. You can’t mentor founders through an acquisition if you’ve never bought or sold a company. Full stop.
Yet every day, people with zero operational experience, no leadership background, and no P&L responsibility are coaching others on how to “win” in business.
It’s absurd. It’s dangerous. And it’s costing people time, money, and momentum they can’t get back.
The Cult of Cosmic Advice
Some of the worst offenders in this space take things even further — into the mystical. They tell people that “the universe will show you the way”, that if you just “vibrate higher” and “believe harder,” things will magically align.
Let’s be clear: optimism has its place. Confidence matters. Belief in yourself is foundational. But manifestation without motion is just delusion.
No bank, investor, customer, or board of directors is going to reward you for positive thinking if your numbers are tanking and your team is disorganized. You don’t scale a business through the “Law of Attraction.” You scale it through execution, leadership, systems, product-market fit, financial discipline, and an unrelenting focus on doing what works — not waiting for a cosmic sign.
A Real-World Example: What Happens When You Hire the Wrong Help
A few years ago, we were brought in to assess a mid-sized, family-owned business that had enjoyed decades of strong market position and customer loyalty.
But the board, eager for fresh energy and “new ideas,” brought in an FOB — Friend of the Board — to lead the business through its next chapter. This individual had never run a company, never led a team at scale, and had no experience in the industry.
What he did have was a great pitch. A smooth delivery. And just enough buzzwords to make it sound like he knew what he was doing.
Fast forward:
- Revenue down double digits
- Margin erosion
- Employee exodus
- Suppliers alienated
- Loss of customer trust
- No strategic plan — just improvisation disguised as “innovation”
- Brand equity damaged beyond repair
This wasn’t bad luck. It was a bad hire. And it all started with choosing style over substance — a decision that cost the company dearly.
Who You Hire Matters
Whether you’re bringing on an executive coach, a business advisor, or a turnaround consultant, the stakes are too high to trust amateurs.
Ask the real questions:
- Have they led anything of significance?
- Can they walk you through specific wins — and what they did to create them?
- Do they understand what it feels like to carry executive pressure and make real tradeoffs?
- Are they offering original insight — or just repeating recycled content?
Hire people who have done it. Not people who’ve just talked about it.
Encouragement: Stop Looking for Gurus — Start Looking for Grit
Most people who seek out coaching don’t need spiritual alignment or another motivational soundbite — they need a plan. They need clarity. They need someone to tell them what works, what doesn’t, and what to do next.
And sometimes, they just need someone to challenge them to get out of their own way.
If you’re stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure — that’s okay. But don’t fall for the hype. The next level of your career or business isn’t going to come from a mindset coach who’s never run anything but their mouth.
It’s going to come from work, wisdom, and walking with people who’ve already climbed the mountain you’re facing.
