5 Tips For Leaders Who Are Dealing With A Corporate Crisis
August 5, 2016
If you’re facing a corporate crisis, you’re tasked with being cool under pressure while solving a monumental problem that, if unresolved, could have serious, real-life consequences. People are unhappy, the brand could suffer, and ultimately people could lose their jobs if it negatively affects the company’s bottom line. That is a lot to handle! If you’re dealing with a corporate crisis, follow these tips so that you can take it in stride.
1: Don’t Act Hastily
While you can’t let a crisis go by the wayside and get around to handling it, you also don’t want to act too hastily so that you’re putting a band-aid on a major problem. Think things through and take the time to make a plan that will meet the company’s needs, including the employees. Determine what you want the outcome to be and determine the best way to get there. And keep in mind — the best way isn’t always the fastest way.
2: Listen and Collaborate
Although you’re the leader, you still want to consult with trusted advisors and upper management to see how you can tackle the problem in the best way possible. By having them contribute, they are not only potentially coming up with a great idea you wouldn’t have thought of on your own, but you’re
3: Be Present and Available
As much as you might want to run and hide, you absolutely must maintain the presence and availability that you had prior to the crisis. A lot of leaders also feel that they can’t show emotion or empathy with their employees. While it’s true that you do want to maintain your composure and be a source of strength for your team and company, you want to be present and available to answer questions and provide reassurance to employees. Being present, visible, and available also shows that you’re taking the crisis head on and are ready to lead.
4: Take Action
At some point in time, you’ve got to move forward. Once you have created a clear-cut plan of action, it’s time to put it into place and stay the course. When you get analysis paralysis or you and the members of your team can’t seem to stop thinking about the what ifs, it might be time to move forward with the plan and then reassess afterward. Not taking action can be just as bad, if not worse, as taking the wrong action.
5: Don’t Forget to Debrief
Corporate crises are serious events and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If your company is facing a corporate crisis, be sure to take time after the dust settles to debrief to find out how you got into that position, why it happened, and to see what worked (and what didn’t) in terms of getting out of it. That way, you’ll be better prepared for, or at the very least, you’ll be better prepared for the next event.
